A really good resource for the lit terms.

I don't know if anyone else is using this website, but it has pretty much every lit term you can possibly imagine.

Question:

In the fiction section with the point of view column, there is omniscient, limited, third person, and unlimited.

I know what omniscient and limited omniscient means, but how would third person, limited, and unlimited be different from these. I'm having trouble differentiating the terms here.

I believe third person merely refers to pronoun use, and that limited focuses on the actions and thoughts of one character (in the third person). Unlimited, however, I've yet to be able to find.

i'm having a similar problem trying to find the difference between omniscient and 3rd person unlimited.

since omniscient is all-knowing, how is unlimited any different?

I read somewhere (gah, but I can't remember where!) that third person unlimited is merely another name for omniscient, but I'm not entirely sure if that's right.

And here's another site with a few literary terms (not nearly as many as Vivian's, but it has the definition for the word "discourse" on it if you guys still need that): http://writing2.richmond.edu/writing/wweb/terms.html

For some reason, Vivian's link didn't work for me. Linkrot, maybe?

Also, I find it interesting that no one suggested Wikipedia yet. This isn't a formal MLA-citation-required essay, so there isn't a reason not to use it.

Besides, you won't see any linkrot there :)
